Papua New Guinea lies to the north of Australia
in the West Pacific. The New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea
is north east of mainland PNG. The Provincial capital, Kavieng,
is located at the northern tip of the long and narrow island of
New Ireland, just 2° degrees south of the equator.
Kavieng is often described as a "typical Somerset Maughan
south seas island port". It has a large, beautiful harbour,
formed by Nago, Nusalik and Nusalavu Islands. Along its edge on
the mainland is Kaviengs Harbour Drive, a gently curving road,
shaded by huge trees, which passes many points of historical interest.
Adventures In Paradise Yacht Charters operate from Nusalik Island,
right next door to the Nusa
Island Retreat.
Kavieng Airport is only 2 minutes from the harbour, and Nusalik
Island is a short banana boat ride across from the wharf.
From Kavieng, you can explore the myriad of islands
to the north west of New Ireland. There are 149 islands in New Ireland
Province scattered over an area of 230,000 sq km of sea. Many parts
of the area remain as it has for centuries. The people are incredibly
friendly and accommodating, the islands spectacularly beautiful,
and the waters pristine.
"You cant get much more remote than this, but that
was the point with tropical marine ecosystems under so much
pressure from pollution and destructive fishing practices, divers
increasingly need to go further and spend more to find those locations
where these problems havent yet resulted in major environmental
change.
As a provincial capital, Kavieng is at the less developed end
of the urban scale barely a town, really. But at 2 degrees
below the equator, the temperature never dips below balmy, sea breezes
temper the suns hammer-like effects and ready smiles are everywhere."
